CD81363 Aida Corelli/Arroyo 1-22-66
Per Marco's request, here is the Aida performance
from the Met with Corelli and Arroyo.
I assume one reason Marco is interested in the
performance is that, according to René Seghers'
Corelli biography (p. 330), this was the first
time Corelli attempted the diminuendo on the
B-flat of "Celeste Aida," which Corelli had been
working on and finally felt he had mastered (and
it is pretty amazing here). Seghers goes on to
say that in the rest of the performance, Corelli
can be heard using newfound dynamic and lyric
control. Mehta speeds through the piece like a
demon, but it's an exciting performance.
This in-audience recording is nicely clear with
the voices fairly close. In a few quiet passages
there are some tape bleed-throughs, but nothing
too distracting.
